Hwæt!

Yesterday, the topic of the lesson was dragons. The book mentioned that Beowulf is a famous story that involves a dragon. I decided this was a good opportunity to blow my kids' minds with a bit of Old English. I wrote the opening lines on the board:

Hwæt! We Gardena in geardagum,
þeodcyninga, þrym gefrunon,
hu ða æþelingas ellen fremedon.
Oft Scyld Scefing sceaþena þreatum,
monegum mægþum, meodosetla ofteah,
egsode eorlas.

Needless to say, they didn't understand much more than "We" and "in." Then again, neither do I.

They also thought I was lying when I said it was English!
