I assigned several kids in my Extensive Reading class extra homework for failing to memorize a newscast script. The script was about the children's author Ezra Jack Keats, so I told them to go online and list 10 of his books. Most of them didn't do it, but one of them offered the excuse that his computer was broken. I was skeptical. Thus, later in class, when we were discussing toys, I did my best Judge Judy impression.
"________, what kind of toys do you like?"
"Computer Games!"
"Which one is your favorite?"
"Starcraft."
"Do you play it a lot?"
"Kind of."
"Did you play it last night?"
"Yes!"
"That's strange," I said with a flourish. "You told me you couldn't do your homework because your computer was broken."
His extra homework has now doubled.
